Article Text
American Fork, Utah, Sept. 27, 1937. " I am striving to gather the records and the histories of pioneer people, who gave to this land of freedom so much of brawn and muscle sacrifice and suffering, that we might have all that we enjoy today.
I am the mother of seven children, four of whom are living, three married and one daughter in school. My husband died last year.
I am the daughter of Amanda Wing, dau, of Samuel Joseph Wing. See Owl Dec. 1912, pp. 1174-1175-1176. Grandfather, Samuel Joseph was a pioneer in the state. Came in 1862, a school teacher, and his bride, Elizabeth Jane Wright of less than a year. When he left Illinois he intended to go to California. Waking from the Missouri River was a long way to Salt Lake City and it was Sept., 900 miles beyond was California.
They were tired and as the thriving settlement in the Salt Lake Valley looking inviting, they decided to stay until spring. Grandfather was given a teaching position at Draper, Utah by Brigham Young. He taught with Samuel Parks, who later was known as Dr. Parks, founder of the University of Utah.
My grandparents' firstborn were twins, then my mother. Each year something detain the trek to Calif. At last it was given up. Now we are a large unit in the Vallies of the Rock Mountains. Grandfather's brother, John William, and his uncle, Joseph Smith Wing, came to Utah with him. Uncle John Williams attended the Wing Reunion in Chicago in 1912, and since then we have kept in touch with the Family through the Owl.
Last week while searching in R.I. records, I found the Will of Adam Mott, dated Apr. 2, 1861, proved Aug. 31, 1861. It mentions three sons, Jacob, Eleazer and Gersham, all born in America." (From Betha W. N. Sager, 40 S. 3rd. U. St., American Forks.)
Bertha Wing Sager continues: March 10, 1939. "( Temporary at Westwood, Lessen Co., Calif.) I have been appointed instructor here, for a group of young married people who are interested in biography and research. We are enjoying a letter writing project, gathering family history material.
You ask if I have studied genealogy - yes, I have my certificate as a qualified genealogist, given me by the Genealogy Society of Utah, Archibald F. Bennett instructor, I also hold as a teacher of genealogy, then I have been historian for the American Fork Camp of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers for 16 years."
